Sony will join the European digital music market in June, with the offical launch of its Connect download service, first revealed in January. Connect will be launched in the UK, France and Germany and will offer more than 300 000 songs, including albums and singles from major and independent record labels at 79 pence per track in the UK, or 0.99 cents on the continent. The announcement was made by Sony Europe at CeBIT technology conference in Hanover.
Songs will be available in the ATRAC3 format, the compressed digital music technology that forms the basis of the company’s MiniDisc products, allowing Connect customers to purchase music online and transfer it directly to their Sony device. The company said that, at the time of the launch, more than 2 million portable Sony devices in Europe would be compatible with the new service.
The Connect service will be downloadable from http://www.ready2connect.com. Sony will use its copyright protection technology OpenMG to ensure secure downloads from Connect.
Sony Connect is expected to be launched in the US in the Spring. [Read more]
